July 25th, 2023 - “Put Yo Money Where Yo Mouth Is” WASHER TOURNAMENT

This year was the 14th annual Decatur Chamber of Commerce’s “Put Yo Money Where Yo Mouth Is” Washer Tournament. The event is held during the Old Settlers Reunion, which takes place during the last full week of July.

In 2014, the Washer Tournament established a Guinness Book World Record, for the most teams competing in a single tournament. Organizers were given a goal of 125 teams by Guinness to set the record. 243 teams competed during the sixth annual tournament at the Wise County Old Settlers Reunion in Decatur Texas.

The Wise County Old Settlers Reunion is the oldest recurring public event in the county. The weeklong reunion is held the last full week in July at Joe Wheeler Park off FM 51 South in Decatur. The reunion got its start in the late 1860s when Confederate veterans met under a full moon in covered wagons with their families to visit comrades before the fall harvest. Today, the reunion grounds are filled with cabins, where many families spend the entire week. A campers meeting and campsite decorating contest on Sunday afternoon kicks off the activities. A carnival with rides and games is located on the reunion grounds, and entertainment is provided nightly at the pavilion.
